A little on Prayer

When I was a child, I remember saying the Lord’s Prayer before bed. Part of me always liked doing it. As I got older, it became less so.

I eventually grew disillusioned with the Christian faith. Over the years, either subconsciously or not, I began to retract myself from the prayers and practices associated with Christian identity. Eventually I left that faith all together. It never felt right but eventually it felt completely wrong for me.

During this time, I turned more toward magick ritual. Words of power, herbs, oils, tools, elaborate spaces with circles and sigils. I dove into witchcraft and sorcery head first. I wanted to see what else was out there when the god I had prayed to seemed unwilling to answer.

Did I get results? Yes, sometimes. Did I encounter entities and beings from other worlds? Absolutely. But it didn’t always feel like it “hit”. I always felt that there was something missing.

I began training with a mentor, and again, things picked up. I was getting better, faster results. I revamped my schedule to accommodate more time with the spirits. And even still, one thing did not change.

No matter how many words of power or sigils I used. No matter how many mantras I repeated with proper breath work. There was still what felt like a chasm between myself and the spirits I was encountering.

Now, a lot of factors could have been at play. Lack of sleep, hunger, stress. These things can, of course, affect our relationships with and ability to communicate with anyone, incarnate or otherwise.

However, for me the missing piece was simply, prayer.

I started out using prayers written by others. That worked for a time. But the more I began to really think about what I wanted to say, and how I felt, I realized I needed to use my own words.

I began to write my own prayers. And I’ve gotten to a point where even in my daily life, I think of new ones on random occasions. It began to feel as though the Spirits themselves were reaching back to say “we hear you, and you can hear us too.”

After prayers, mantras, and breath work I finally began to interpret the spiritual messages that were coming to me.

It became more of a true dialogue between myself and the Spirits of my court.

Prayer gives me a genuine and honest way to talk to my spirits in a way that is truly fitting to me. I am not saying it’s necessary for everyone, but I do advise everyone give it a shot.

Ask yourself, when was the last time you prayed? Did you use your own words or the words of another? How did that feel to you?

It was after asking myself these questions I began to understand what prayer is, to me.

Prayer is a way to convey feelings to your deities. It is those emotions that help open the channel for us to recognize when our deities send their feelings back.
